The International Sculpture Symposium

Picture
The sculpture works created and exhibited in the public space during the International Sculpture Symposium. I have been actively participating in those events since 2013. After participating in the same event—hand carving one piece in ten days and working & eating together with around 20 other sculptors—for over ten years, I made many Swiss local friends and acquaintances and met sculptors from various countries. Among them, meeting veteran female sculptors was particularly encouraging. During work, receiving various questions from visitors and engaging in different conversations also proved inspiring.

Fortunately, my family has accompanied me on several occasions. The invaluable support I received—from my husband who came along, my mother from Okinawa, my sister from the UK, and local friends and symposium staff who helped care for our children—allowed me to focus entirely on my work during the symposium. This experience became an irreplaceable treasure. It is no exaggeration to say the Morges International Sculpture Symposium (founded by Ewald Brigger in 1992) fostered me as a sculptor!

Granite carving symposium, Acton, MA and Snow Carving Symposium, Yellowknife, Canada

Since 2019, I have participated in the local granite sculpture symposium held in Acton, Massachusetts, and in 2023, I also participated in snow sculpture carving in Yellowknife, Canada. The Acton Granite Sculpture Symposium is typically held for three weeks in August, with a small number of local and international sculptors participating. Each sculptor works on their own piece, but the rock's hardness and the large size of the blocks mean even three weeks feels like a full production schedule. Snow sculpting, on the other hand, was grueling work: a team of three had to complete a 10f (3meter) square cube in just two and a half days, working in extreme cold on the frozen lake. Both experiences enhanced my ability to tackle large-scale works and improved my capacity for collaborative production.
